Standing 277 meters above sea level, Lycabettus Hill (sometimes spelt Lykavitos) is the highest point of Athens. Although it is a beautiful walk up via a circular path it might be a test of endurance and a challenge in summer. Luckily, a cliff railway can take you to the top of the hill and proves to be a novelty for younger kids and seniors. Unluckily there is no view on the way up or down because it moves inside a closed tunnel. The view from Lycabettus Hill is breathtaking because you can have a 360 degree panorama of Athens. During sunset the view is out of this world whilst waiting for the sun to set and the lights of the Acropolis, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathenaic Stadium and Ancient Agora to come on. At the top of the hill you will find the Greek whitewashed chapel of Agios Georgios (St. George) and a restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What makes it so special is that it reminds of a Cycladic island. It has narrow alleys that lead to beautiful terraces and white cubic houses with blue doors and windows. Most of the houses are well-kept with a lot of flowers and some very cute furry residents that you will see lying under the sun, cats.

With the city’s trendiest neighborhoods being just a stone’s throw away, Monastiraki has been locals’ favorite meeting point for decades now. The famous square is always full of life, buzzing with a cheerful and lively atmosphere. There are various kinds of charming cafes, wine bars, restaurants and taverns for all tastes as long as plenty of souvenir shops. The Monastiraki Flea Market is located in Monastiraki Square near the subway station. It is open every day but Sunday is the day it gets especially crowded with bargain hunters and the bric-a-brac explodes out onto the pavements. It is an open-air market that sells valuable antiques, unique souvenirs and all manner of goods at all price levels. This is a great place to experience the true colors of the local life and culture!

Psiri is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens, located north of Monastiraki and Plaka. In this area, you will find many abandoned buildings, even though the atmosphere of decadence has been balanced out over the years and Psiri has changed a lot. Some of the neoclassical buildings have been restored and a lot of cool bars and shops have opened. Today, it attracts many young Athenians who enjoy the blend of traditional and modern character of the area. Although Psiri offers many charming cafes, restaurants and shops to visit during the day, the scenery is much different at nighttime, when the local bars come to life. Famous for its nightlife, Psiri is popular among young people and the music creates a lovely atmosphere.
